Studio Helping with New Fable Lays Off Developers

At least ten employees at Eidos-Montréal, which is helping Playground Games develop the new Fable, were laid off this week, Insider Gaming reported on December 2.
Sources told the outlet that the company had cancelled several projects in recent days, although its work on Fable was not affected.
“The focus for Eidos-Montreal right now, they say, is on the work it’s doing with Microsoft and Xbox on games like Grounded 2 and Fable. There’s also another internal project that started development in 2019 which, sources say, has no way of recouping its current costs,” the report states.
Further layoffs are forecasted after work on those projects is completed.
Eidos has been involved in Fable development since at least summer 2024. In March 2025, the studio laid off 75 employees “mandates coming to an end.”
Playground Games has been developing the new Fable since around 2020. The release has already been delayed and is currently expected in autumn 2026. Journalist Jez Corden has said the game is extremely expensive to make; Eidos and Third Kind Games have also been brought in to assist with development.
