Fable’s Exact Release Date Was Not Announced Because of GTA 6

Microsoft did not announce a more precise 2025 release date for Fable partly because it was concerned GTA 6 could dominate players’ attention, Xbox president of game content and studios Matt Booty acknowledged in a June 20 Variety podcast.
“I think many across the industry are of course going to plan around GTA 6, and we're all looking forward to that game, which should be amazing,” GamesRadar quoted Booty as saying.
In his view, the industry wants to make sure Xbox projects are not left “in the shadow of someone else’s big release,” while the platform needs to keep its release-date “options open.”
Booty also cited internal competition between projects in Xbox’s large portfolio as another reason for this approach.
Each game needs a chance to “shine,” requiring careful planning of the release schedule, he said.
On June 9, Xbox Games Showcase 2024 officially confirmed that the new Fable was planned for 2025 and showed a new trailer with gameplay footage. Several screenshots then appeared on the game’s Xbox Store page.
In July 2020, Microsoft confirmed that a new Fable was in development at Playground Games, best known for the Forza Horizon racing series. A teaser was shown at Xbox Games Showcase 2020, after almost a decade of unconfirmed rumors.
Three years later, in June 2023, Playground showed the first trailer with gameplay footage at Xbox Games Showcase 2023. At the time, it was unclear whether the game was Fable 4 or a reboot of the series. It was known that the new game was being developed on the ForzaTech engine.
