Gnomes in Fable 3

Those annoying gnomes are part of the lengthy "Gnomes are Evil!" quest in Fable 3. You receive it in Brightwall from Brian fairly early in the game.

According to the story, 50 magically charged garden gnomes go out of control and scatter across all 16 regions of the game (DLC locations do not count). The player has to find the fugitives and return them by shooting each one. The gnomes hide remarkably well in all sorts of unexpected places, but give themselves away with loud insults — just like the last Gargoyle from Fable 2, which brought them to life.

The locations of all the gnomes, along with tips to make finding them easier, are in this FableGame guide.

Walkthrough tips

Gnome counter. Finding the gnomes is one of the game's major side activities, so it has its own counter. You can find it on the map table in the Sanctuary, in the short description of each region.

"Sub-areas." Keep in mind that some gnomes counted as part of the main regions are actually located inside connected dungeons.

Region order. During their journey, the Hero and Walter travel from east to west across Albion (as does this guide). However, some parts of regions may be inaccessible when you first visit them — for example, during your first trip to Bowerstone Industrial. It therefore makes sense to return later, once you are able to move freely around the region.

How to collect the gnomes. It is easiest to collect at least one whole region at a time, so you do not forget which gnomes you have already returned. They have no effect on the main story, so you can leave this quest until later if necessary.

Getting the rewards. You can return to Brian for an intermediate reward after every ten gnomes. He will also update you on the status of his complaint to the company that sold him the troublesome decorations. However, you do not need to visit him several times: you will receive all five rewards anyway:

  • 10 gnomes — Harlequin Makeup;
  • 20 gnomes — Shining Armour;
  • 30 gnomes — a random rare gem;
  • 40 gnomes — Level 5 Charisma Dog Training Book;
  • 50 gnomes — the legendary Gnomewrecker pistol, 40 Guild Seals, and the ability to finally buy Brian's house.

Completing this lengthy quest will also unlock the "Gnome Invasion" achievement.

Gnome locations

Brightwall

Number of gnomes: 5.

N1. You are guaranteed to destroy the very first gnome at the beginning of the quest. He is hanging on the wall inside Brian's house.

N2. Walk through the town gates, cross the bridge and immediately turn left down the street (or simply fast travel to the House of Slats). The gnome is hanging on the left exterior wall of the house.

N3. From the town gates, cross the bridge and continue up the main road. After passing under the arch, turn right and keep going until you reach the green rocks (or simply fast travel to Bumbler's Gruff). The famous Brightwall frog statues are also nearby.

N4. Enter Brightwall Academy and head down into the Reliquary. Keep going until you reach the huge rocky chamber with the rising platforms. Immediately after them is a small staircase. Turn right and go around the corner. The gnome is hanging on a pillar.

N5. After gnome N4, jump off the ledge into the water. Cross the large room and you will see a door with braziers, as well as Jones's skeleton and a note nearby (an Easter egg). There is a railing to the right of the skeleton. The gnome is hanging on the wall behind it.

Dweller Camp

Number of gnomes: 1.

Fast travel to the caravan called Winter Wagon — it is located fairly close to the entrance to the region — and turn around. Behind you is a path climbing along the snowy mountain. The gnome is hanging on the outside of the railing.

Mercenary Camp

Number of gnomes: 1.

Fast travel to the Merc-antile general goods store. There is a water tower next to it. The gnome is standing upright on top of the tower.

Mistpeak Valley

Number of gnomes: 7 (in the valley itself, the Mistpeak section of the monorail — The Hole — and Chillbreath Caverns).

N1. From the Brightwall exit, head up the snowy mountain and cross several bridges until you reach an area with ruins, a table, a shovel and a skeleton. The gnome is hanging over the cliff. All the other gnomes in this region are much lower down.

N2. At the foot of the mountain there is a Demon Door you can fast travel to. The gnome is standing on the frozen waterfall to its right.

N3. One of the several entrances to Chillbreath Caverns has no snow around it. If you are descending from the Brightwall exit, or coming from gnome number two, it will be on your right. If you are climbing up from the lake, it will be on your left.

Follow the cave until the path forks. Turn left towards the frozen underground lake with a bridge and frozen waterfall. The gnome is standing on a tall rock resembling a pillar or stalactite. You can then head straight back outside.

N4. Another entrance to Chillbreath Caverns has a little snow around it. If you are descending from the Brightwall exit, it will be on your left after the bridge (the Demon Door will be behind you and to your left). If you are climbing from the lake, the bridge you need will be on your right.

The gnome is right at the entrance: turn around and you will see him high on the left, hanging from the rock. You can head back outside immediately after shooting him.

N5. After leaving the cave, run down into the lower part of the region, then cross to the other side — straight across the lake towards the monorail station. To the right of the station entrance is a small path climbing to an overlook with a Silver Key and a view of Brightwall Academy.

The gnome is hanging at the end of the path, on the trunk of a tree to the right.

N6. Return to the station entrance and go inside. Take the lift down, just as you did during the quest with Walter, and run to the fallen monorail carriage (which is still burning).

The gnome is hanging on a post just past the carriage. A useful landmark is the large wheel. The spot you need is before the ground-level rails transition onto the bridge.

N7. Now keep running deep into the cave until you reach the underground arena where you and Walter fought the Hobbes. Once you enter, turn around. The gnome is hanging on the ruined wall, to the left above the entrance.

Mourningwood

Number of gnomes: 3.

N1. Fast travel to the western side of the region, to the eco-village (The Mellow Emporium is the closest property to the gnome). When facing the building's sign, you will see two semicircular arches — the left one leads to Bowerstone Industrial. The gnome is hanging on the rocks between these two arches.

N2. Fast travel to Mourningwood Fort, leave it and head uphill. It is easiest to stay on the central path without turning off, for example, towards The Dark Sanctum (that path will be on your left).

When you reach the first graves of the large cemetery, there will be ruins of the Old Kingdom in the middle. The gnome is hanging on the back of the ruins.

N3. Enter the Ossuary from Mourningwood. Its entrance appears during the quest with Sam and Max, "Bored to Death". It is not far from gnome number two: walk to the statue in the middle of the cemetery and turn left.

Inside the Ossuary, climb the stairs, walk along the long balcony and jump down into the next courtyard. You will reach an area with a large tree. Nearby is a balcony with five tombs and a chest at the end. The gnome is hiding between the tombs.

Sunset House

Number of gnomes: 1.

Use the facade of the ghostly house as your landmark (it appears at night if you have not yet completed the related quest), or the ruins during the day before completing it.

The gnome is hanging on the rocks beside the small pond to the right of the entrance.

Bowerstone Industrial

Number of gnomes: 5 (including two found in underground areas — the Sewers and Cesspools).

N1. On the wall of a factory along the route from the docks (the right bank of the river if the sea is behind you). You pass close to this spot when you first arrive in the city with Walter, although you cannot get the gnome at that point because weapon selection is temporarily unavailable.

N2. On the opposite bank from gnome number one is a locked entrance to a factory that opens during the "Animal Liberation" quest.

Go through the gate in the alley, climb the stairs and jump down into the factory. The gnome is standing inside a cage.

N3. Walk through the courtyard of Reaver's factory, cross the bridge to the other bank and turn around. The gnome is hanging in a recess beneath the bridge, on the same side as Reaver's factory.

N4. This one is in the Sewers. The entrance is a door beneath the crane beside Reaver's factory. You visit this dungeon during the "One Ring to Find" quest. Once inside, keep to the left until you reach one of the holes in the wall. The gnome is hanging from a grate near the ceiling.

N5. This one is in the Cesspools. The hidden entrance is inside Wooble-Fuddlebuck-Glimborg Mansion, across from the orphanage / brothel.

Go through the beginning of the dungeon and jump from the ledge into the water.

From there, climb the path and keep running for quite a while until you reach the gnome. At the fork, go right, past the Silver Key behind the boards. Then turn right again and head downhill until you see the Hobbe fort. From there, continue straight to the dead end. The gnome is hanging on the wall at the end.

Bowerstone Market

Number of gnomes: 3.

N1. Fast travel to the house called The Doghouse. Buy it and do not rent it out (or knock on the door during the day) so you can reach the backyard. The gnome is hanging on the rear exterior wall of the house.

The other two gnomes are on the opposite bank, near the city walls.

N2. Go to the statue of Logan by the city gates and turn right (when facing the exit from the city), towards the furniture shop We've Got Wood.

Before reaching the shop, turn left and climb the stairs onto the wall. Run along the wall to the tower, where the gnome is hanging facing you.

N3. Start from the same statue of Logan, but this time turn left instead of right (when facing the exit from the city) and continue along the same bank.

The gnome is hanging on the city wall between the Flower Bower stall and The Gate House. You can simply fast travel to the latter.

Bowerstone Old Quarter

Number of gnomes: 2.

N1. If you are coming from the beach, stay on the right after passing through the gates. Before reaching the knight-on-a-pig statue, you will pass Fattie's Retreat and House of Stains. The gnome is hanging between them, on the right exterior wall of House of Stains.

N2. At the other end of the region, on the climb towards the castle, there is a narrow courtyard between Cheese Cottage and Duckworth House. The gnome is standing in the window of another house visible beyond the courtyard.

Millfields

Number of gnomes: 5. Some are located in Dankwater Cavern (you do not need to complete the "Hobnobbing With Hobbes" quest to reach the gnomes).

N1. If you are coming from Bowerstone and the Millfields Monorail Station, the gnome is on the uphill path that eventually leads towards Bower Lake. Look on the rocks to your right.

N2. The second gnome is hanging on ruins by the lakeshore. The spot is directly below the beginning of the path to Driftwood.

N3. Run to Reaver's Manor and go down the steps into the lower part of the garden, closer to the shore. The gnome is hanging on the stone wall to the left.

N4. In Dankwater Cavern. Its entrance is behind a small pond on higher ground:

  • Reaver's Manor, the path to Driftwood and the bridge over the river flowing into the lake will be behind you;
  • the lake will be on your right;
  • the road will lead towards Bowerstone, the monorail station and the location of gnome N1;
  • the spot you need is on the left side of the road, beside the statue of Theodore Coen (one of the statues of a man with a telescope).

You can also come here during the "Hobnobbing With Hobbes" quest, which becomes available after finishing the main story.

As soon as you enter the cavern, follow the path through the open area. Before entering the next enclosed passage, you will see a waterfall. The gnome is standing on the rock to the right of it.

N5. Enter the next passage and keep to the right. The gnome is hanging inside a small recess (a dead end) where your dog will lead you to dig up treasure.

Silverpines

Number of gnomes: 2.

N1. Fast travel to the House of Hulshoff, located near the entrance to the mine. The gnome is hanging on the right side of the mine entrance.

N2. With the mine behind you, leave the settlement to the right (not towards Millfields). Immediately after leaving, turn right onto the uphill path leading towards the cemetery. Continue straight past the tomb, effectively circling around the village from above.

After the tomb, there is another turn to the right. At the end of this path you will see a wooden tower-like structure with a lift. The gnome is hanging from its left support.

Driftwood

Number of gnomes: 2.

N1. On the coast just after entering the region. Leave the field with the single caravan behind you, turn sharply left around the corner and follow the path downhill.

The gnome is sitting in a tiny caravan beneath a tree.

N2. On the furthest small island on the right side of the region when travelling away from the shore and the first gnome (it is closest to the point from which you can see Bowerstone in the distance).

To save time, you can fast travel to the Carpenter's Lodge if it has already been built. The gnome is standing on a rock.

Bowerstone Castle

Number of gnomes: 3.

N1. The first one is in the kitchen, where the Hero gives a speech to the servants at the beginning of the game. He is standing on top of a large barrel in the corner.

N2. The second is in the castle gardens. He is standing in a small fountain near the gazebo, not far from the entrance to the Catacombs.

N3. Enter the Catacombs and run until you reach the first open area.

The gnome is hanging on the pillar to the right of the opening leading into the open area.

Shifting Sands

Number of gnomes: 4.

N1. Immediately outside the city is a large staircase with columns. The gnome is hanging on one of the columns to the left.

N2. From the city exit, take the road slightly to the right of centre (but not the far-right road). It leads towards the huge desert arch and the Royal Army outpost, if you chose to build it. This particularly sneaky gnome is hiding on the rock to the left and blends in with the stone.

N3. Turn around from the previous gnome and head back. The far-right road from the city leads to Sandfall Palace from the "The Desert Star" quest. The gnome is hanging on the rock to the left of the entrance.

N4. Enter the Palace and keep going until you reach the second inner courtyard. Climb the stairs there and run along the balcony. The gnome is hanging on the wall near the far end of the balcony.

City of Aurora

Number of gnomes: 2.

N1. Fast travel to the house called The Dunes, located near the docks. The gnome is hanging outside the house, on its left side at second-floor height.

N2. Fast travel to the house called Wanderer's Retreat. Walk uphill and pass under the arch. Immediately beyond it, on the left, is a shrine with candles.

The gnome is hanging above it (you can also pick up the book "The Very Unsafe Book for Boys, Vol. 1: Hang Gliders" from the same shrine).

The Veiled Path

Number of gnomes: 4 (some are located inside the dungeon called The Enigma).

N1. Immediately after entering the region, turn around and look to the right. The gnome is hanging on the rock.

N2. Around the middle of the region you will see a staircase and a platform with three statues. The gnome is hanging on this platform, below the statue on the left.

N3. On the same platform is a door leading into a location called The Enigma. Go inside. To reach the gnome, shoot the Flit Switch above the door in the first room (the one with the chest) using a ranged weapon. This opens the door into the next chamber, which contains braziers.

One of them opens the door into another large room, this one containing statues and no braziers. The gnome is standing on the railing in one of the passages on the left.

N4. Once you are finished with The Enigma and return outside, continue along The Veiled Path. The gnome is hanging on a column beside two statues (you can still see the entrance to The Enigma from this spot).
