Fable Director Names Three Core Elements of the Series

The essence of Fable is that it should be a fairytale rather than fantasy, according to Ralph Fulton, game director of the new Fable.
“When we started working on this project, we got a treasure trove of documents from Lionhead that had been in storage. Something that I thought was just brilliantly succinct was one of the documents, which said: ‘Fable is Fairytale, not Fantasy’ – which is just super neat. I guess our interpretation of what that means is that fairytale and fantasy probably exist on opposite ends of a spectrum,” he explained in an interview with Xbox Wire.
In Fulton’s view, fantasy has a different tone — it's “grand, sweeping, geopolitical, serious,” like The Witcher or Skyrim. Fairytales, by contrast, are smaller stories about ordinary people and tend to carry a moral.
He named “Britishness,” including British humor, as another core component of Fable, with freedom of choice as the third.
Earlier that day, the new Fable was shown at Xbox Developer_Direct, where an autumn 2026 release window was confirmed and many gameplay features were revealed. The game will feature an open world, a choice of the Hero’s gender, character customization and many mechanics familiar from the series, including jobs, buying homes and interacting with NPCs.
Fable has officially been in development for more than five years — at least since 2020. It was originally planned for release in 2025, but its launch was later tied to Xbox’s 25th anniversary in autumn 2026.
