Gameplay and story details for the new Fable were finally revealed on January 22 at Xbox Developer_Direct. The game received a 12-minute segment at the end of the broadcast, with footage narrated by developers from Playground Games.
The story begins in the small village of Briar Hill. When danger strikes, the protagonist manifests Hero powers for the first time — the first Hero in a generation. After a mysterious stranger causes a catastrophe that turns all the villagers to stone, the protagonist is left alone and sets out into the vast open world of Albion, which Playground promises will be rich and detailed.
Players will be able to travel to any location from the start. Their adventures will take them to Bowerstone, home to Fairfax Castle from Fable 2, as well as the Heroes’ Guild. A considerable amount of time will be spent at the Guild uncovering the secrets of its reclusive leader, Humphry the Golden, who was shown in 2024.
To the north are mountains, rocky coastlines, eerie swamps and the legendary port city of Bloodstone. There, players will encounter the leaders of two rival gangs and uncover the plans of a sinister Shadow cult.
According to the developers, the new Fable will preserve the freedom to play any kind of Hero: players can choose a character model, gender, clothing, hairstyle, skin tone, tattoos and scars. Character progression, weapons and an individual combat style will provide further personalization.
Playground also stressed that a Hero’s life is about more than combat. Interaction with NPCs returns from earlier games, with more than a thousand characters in the world. Each has a personality, occupation and hobbies, and every one can be interacted with in different ways; all dialogue is voiced. Other Heroic activities include taking jobs, buying homes and businesses, and even hiring employees.
The presentation also focused on morality, which will remain a key part of the game but will not be black and white. The Hero’s actions build a reputation that determines how each character reacts verbally, with lines ranging from “You’re a legend!” and “Very impressive” to “We get it, you’re rich” and “Imbecile.”
Players will regularly make choices both large and small, and some decisions can permanently change locations. One example involved giant Dave from the 2023 trailer: he is revealed to be a “selfish gardener” who discovered a magical growth formula and became a major problem. The Hero can spare or kill him. If Dave dies, his body remains there for the rest of the game, his sister will be angry with the player, and local property prices will change.
Game director Ralph Fulton says the Fable team is passionate about the project and is building it in the spirit of Lionhead’s classic trilogy. The game combines action, drama and British humor, while its broader theme is choice and consequence, centered on the question: what does it mean to you to be a Hero?
Playground sees its mission as creating a game for existing fans while introducing the franchise to a new generation, Fulton added. He promised more details closer to release, currently planned for autumn 2026 on PC, Xbox and PlayStation.
New screenshots also appeared on Fable’s Steam page after the presentation.
Earlier that week, dozens of pieces of concept art from the new Fable appeared online. It also emerged that the game could receive an ESRB Mature 17+ rating.
Fable has officially been in development for more than five years — at least since 2020. Footage was shown in the Xbox podcast in February 2025, and before that at Xbox Games Showcase in 2023 and in 2024. The game was initially planned for 2025, but its launch was later tied to Xbox’s 25th anniversary in autumn 2026.
