New Fable Hero Will Not Grow Horns or a Halo Based on Morality

The Hero’s appearance in the new Fable will not change based on morality, game director Ralph Fulton said on January 22.
“That sort of character morphing feature, obviously a really central part of the original games. It's not in ours,” he explained in an interview with IGN.
The mechanic was not brought back because in the reboot “there is no objective good and evil” and “you're never that thing, absolutely.”
Reputation will also be tied to a particular settlement or part of the world. People elsewhere will not know what to think of the protagonist, allowing the player to build a different reputation there.
“You couldn't do that if you walked in with horns and a trident. Your reputation would precede you in that instance. And honestly, that ability to be completely in control of your identity and thus what people think of you felt more important to us than that legacy feature. So, it worked great in those games. It didn't seem to fit in ours,” Fulton concluded.
In another interview published around the same time by Xbox Wire, Fulton described the game’s morality system as more forward-looking than that of the original trilogy.
Earlier that day, the new Fable was shown at Xbox Developer_Direct, where an autumn 2026 release window was confirmed and many gameplay features were revealed. The game will feature an open world, a choice of the Hero’s gender, character customization and many mechanics familiar from the series, including jobs, buying homes and interacting with NPCs.
Fable has officially been in development for more than five years — at least since 2020. It was originally planned for release in 2025, but its launch was later tied to Xbox’s 25th anniversary in autumn 2026.
