Players will spend roughly the first 90 minutes of the new Fable controlling the protagonist as a child, Playground Games head Ralph Fulton revealed on the official Xbox podcast.
At the beginning of the game, the protagonist will manifest Hero powers, becoming the first Hero in Albion in a generation. Isabel will then turn the residents of the protagonist’s home village of Briar Hill, including their grandmother, to stone. To save them, the Hero will leave the village for the first time and, following their grandmother’s advice, head for the Heroes’ Guild.
Upon reaching Bowerstone, the protagonist will discover that the Guild is locked. Their brother will help them obtain the key. Inside, the Hero will meet Humphry the Golden — a legendary Hero who turns out to be far less impressive in person than his reputation suggests.
Fulton also shared more details about Bowerstone itself. Building Albion’s capital was a huge level-design undertaking for Playground Games. The city is very dense and vertical, while the developers also tried to evoke a sense of nostalgia for fans of the original trilogy.
Players will be able to enter every house, each with a detailed interior. Property varies by district and price: wealthy Warminster, near the palace, features large and expensive homes, while early in the game the Hero will most likely only be able to afford a home in the rougher district of Copperbottom.
Last week, 18 minutes of Fable gameplay were shown at Gamescom 2026, both with and without developer commentary. The footage shows a main story quest set in Bowerstone. The heroine arrives in the city following the incident in her home village of Briar Hill, meets Humphry and tries to save him from his debts, including by fighting local gang members.
Journalists were also able to try another demo focused on the combat system. In that quest, the Hero and Humphry descend into a mine and fight Hollow Folk and ghosts.
Fable will be released on February 23, 2027, although those who purchase the Premium Edition or Collector’s Edition will be able to start playing five days earlier, on February 18.
