Fable 2 Recomp Developers Port the Game to Godot

The long-awaited Fable 2 Recomp project has switched to a new architecture built around the open-source Godot engine. Project representative Loreaxe revealed the major update on September 13.
Initially, the developers tried to hook up the necessary systems themselves and build a renderer for the recompiled version of the game. In early August, they came up with the idea of using Godot for graphics and audio output, but the team soon settled on a more radical solution — moving all of their existing work to the new engine.
“Turns out we had so many hooks, disorganised code and decompiled/understood assets lying around that it was easier to port the game into Godot. The more we looked into this, the easier it became,” Loreaxe explained.
The ReXGlue SDK has not gone anywhere, however. Fable 2 and ReXGlue now act as a kind of “simulation server”: this part handles physics, AI, quests, scripts and saves.
Godot, meanwhile, has become the main host for the project and is responsible for building the game world, loading assets, textures, animations and models, as well as audio, lighting and the UI. According to the developers, a similar approach was used to create The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.
Over the past month, the developers have managed to port and restore a significant portion of the game, as demonstrated in new screenshots, with the team drawing particular attention to the custom menus. The developers say work has been progressing considerably faster than expected since the switch to the new architecture.
“We honestly didn’t think this crazy idea would work, then we didn’t and still don’t believe it’s working and this “easy” but it is,” the update reads.
Fable 2 Recomp is still far from complete. Due to the large number of changes being made, the developers have mostly tested only the first few hours of the game so far. The next major steps will be getting the UI working and conducting another pass on the Windows version.
After that, the developers plan to launch a closed beta test. They want to recruit players with a variety of hardware configurations to find issues that may have gone unnoticed by the development team. A public release is not planned just yet.
The team is also continuing its work on online multiplayer. This is why the September update did not include a new video — one of the developers had been focused on getting multiplayer working.
This spring, the Fable 2 Recomp team showed its first attempts to launch the game. At the time, the prototype was already running on Linux and allowed players to complete the “childhood” section of the story, although it was still affected by issues involving graphics, Fable 2’s code and ReXGlue. The project itself started in early 2025 at the initiative of Canadian YouTuber Mattscreative.
Fable 2 itself was released in 2008 as an Xbox 360 exclusive and later received support for newer generations of Xbox consoles. Despite demand from fans, an official PC version never materialised. Enthusiasts continued trying to run the game through emulation over the years, and those efforts eventually proved successful. Today, the game can be completed using the Xenia emulator, although not without bugs.
