The developers of the new Fable have revealed how its backstory differs from the lore of the original trilogy. The text, presented as an extract from historian Brian Bifford’s book, was published on the game’s official website on August 10.
According to the new canon, Jack of Blades, the Knight of Blades and the Queen of Blades once ruled Albion before the Court was defeated by William Black. However, the new account adds some details: Black did not do it alone, but alongside two Hero acolytes — the Heroes of Blood and Bower — and he may not even have been the first person capable of wielding Will.
The author of the fictional historical work Albion: A Biography questions the truth of the legends about the Court and its tyrannical ruler, which are depicted in murals at the Heroes’ Guild. He also cites alternative versions of the story: that Jack betrayed his allies, or that the Court simply grew bored of ruling and the trio left the peaceful lands of their own accord.
According to Bifford, all of this may be nothing more than Heroes’ Guild propaganda. The only thing he considers undeniable is that the Age of Heroes began after the Court was overthrown.
The text also includes several striking illustrations depicting Black and his companions confronting the Court. These are the first depictions in franchise history of all the characters mentioned above except Jack (Black himself had previously been known to fans only as Scythe).

Players first learned about William Black’s conflict with the Court in 2008, when the canonical mini-game Tales of Albion was released. Black would go on to become the first Archon of the Old Kingdom.
Since Playground Games’ Fable is a remake, some of the events, characters and locations familiar to players will be different. For now, it is impossible to say how extensive the changes to the canon will be. Besides the newly published backstory, we already know that the Guild has ended up in Glushville, while Bloodstone has “moved” from the south to the north.
