Playground Games’ new Fable could theoretically launch in 2024, although development might also stretch into 2025, according to forecasts published by international gaming outlets in December 2023.
“We look ahead to what we can expect from the Xbox brand in 2024. With huge games such as Avowed and a reimaging of the Fable universe, Xbox is poised to dominate in the space of fantasy RPG action games. <...> After the acquisition of so many studios in 2023 and the many years that have preceeded it, the Xbox platform is gearing up to show gamers what it's truly capable of,” IGN wrote.
“And while Fable feels like the biggest game in Xbox’s first-party portfolio not named The Elder Scrolls 6, it too still seems like we’re going to have to wait a while to play it,” IGN Nordic noted.
“Following a series of development studio acquisitions, the most recent and high-profile of which is Microsoft's purchase of Activision-Blizzard, the future slate of Xbox console exclusive releases is starting to look up. However, a number of highly anticipated exclusives don't yet have release windows, and are unlikely to make the 2024 cutoff, such as the Fable reboot, <...>” Screen Rant added.
“The wait for news was worth it, especially after Fable bolstered Xbox Games Showcase 2023. Fable 4 brings back the series’ trademark British humor, and we are already excited. We got our first look at Albion’s fantasy world as it appears in the new game, with Richard Ayoade playing an imposing Hero ‘big boss’. It is safe to say that Playground looks set to impress us — whenever the game arrives, given that it still has no release date,” GamesRadar’s authors wrote.
TechRadar, meanwhile, simply included the game in its roundup of anticipated 2024 titles.
In July 2020, Microsoft confirmed that a new Fable was in development at Playground Games, best known for the Forza Horizon racing series. A teaser was shown at Xbox Games Showcase 2020, after almost a decade of unconfirmed rumors.
Three years later, in June 2023, Playground showed a trailer with gameplay footage at Xbox Games Showcase 2023. At the time, it was unclear whether the game was Fable 4 or a reboot of the series. It was known that the new game was being developed on the ForzaTech engine.
