Fable Developers Tried to Move Away from Fantasy Clichés

The writers of the new Fable tried to avoid typical fantasy clichés in the story. Game director Ralph Fulton discussed this while commenting on an unusually written letter from the demo quest involving skeletons in a mine.
"We were a bit bored of traditional fantasy cliches and the way characters usually speak in those settings. I love media, particularly in period settings, that use a modern tone of voice, idiom, and phrasing … I don’t think we could have gotten Matt King (who plays Humphry — Ed.) to play a cliched fantasy character," he said in an interview with British newspaper The Guardian.
Other actors also improvised extensively while creating their characters. Richard Ayoade (who plays Dave), for example, improvised to such an extent that he was practically creating a new script on the spot. According to Fulton, the day he listened to the dialogue invented by the actor became one of his favorites during the development of the project.
"Natasia Demetriou (who plays Jenny — Ed.) brought a level of British swearing to her character that honestly shocked us, but it’s brilliant and we let her run with it," added the head of Playground Games.
Fable remake’s star-studded cast was revealed in June. The villainous Hero Isabel is played by Hayley Atwell of The Avengers. The roles of the Hero of Briar Hill went to Lily Nichol and Akweli Roach.
In late August, Gamescom 2026 featured 18 minutes of gameplay — a playthrough of a story quest set in Bowerstone. Journalists were also able to try another demo focused on the combat system.
The game will be released on February 23, 2027 for PC, Xbox and PlayStation, although those who purchase the Premium Edition or Collector's Edition will be able to start playing five days earlier, on February 18.
