Ralph Fulton Reveals What Saved Fable's Development
Language: EN | RU
The lengthy development of the Fable remake was not cancelled because of the franchise’s importance to the video game industry as a whole, game director Ralph Fulton believes.
"I genuinely think Fable is an important game. What has protected us over a long development cycle is that so many people within Xbox view Fable as vital to the DNA of the platform. I would go a step further and say it’s important to video games as a whole. It offers a combination of elements that simply doesn’t exist anywhere else," he said in an interview with British newspaper The Guardian at Gamescom 2026.
The article revealed that Playground Games signed the Fable deal back in 2017. Although this information had previously surfaced as a rumor, the game was not officially announced until 2020. For Fulton, a co-founder of the company, the project became an opportunity to prove that his studio deserved to be counted among the best in the world.
"When Xbox mentioned Fable, every other opportunity dissolved into the background. It was all we could think about," the developer recalled.
After taking on Fable, PG had to rapidly assemble a huge team. The studio combined some of its most talented specialists — including experts on Tolkien’s works — with hundreds of new faces.
"The human cost meant bringing hundreds of people from all over the world, many of whom relocated solely because they were fans of Fable," Fulton noted.
According to The Guardian, development of the Fable remake began as far back as 2016, when Lionhead Studios was shut down. This was followed by 6,000 job cuts at Xbox, which owns Playground Games.
In late August, Gamescom 2026 featured 18 minutes of gameplay — a playthrough of a story quest in Bowerstone. Journalists were also able to try another demo focused on the combat system.
The game will be released on February 23, 2027 for PC, Xbox and PlayStation, although those who purchase the Premium Edition or Collector's Edition will be able to start playing five days earlier, on February 18.
