Former Developer: Fable Development Was Put on Hold During COVID

Development of the new Fable was put on the back burner during the COVID period so Playground Games could focus on Forza Horizon 5 (2021), according to former Playground developer and Forza co-creator Gavin Raeburn.
“It was an interesting time. I was looking at Fable, which we were kickstarting at the time. We were building that team, and COVID changed everything. We had to make sure Horizon 5 was successful, and that meant I had to devote all my time to it,” he said in an interview with Traxion on December 9.
Most of Horizon 5’s team leads were then moved over to Fable. Raeburn said coordination was difficult because everyone was working from home.
Playground has officially been developing the new Fable since 2020 — the year the COVID pandemic began — so the disruption coincided with the project’s early stages.
Footage from the game was last shown in the Xbox podcast in February 2025. Fable had originally been planned for release in 2025, but was delayed and is now expected roughly in autumn 2026. Some reports suggest new details could be revealed as early as January.
