❗ New Fable Will Not Be a Direct Continuation of the Original Trilogy

The new Fable is essentially a reboot of the series, game director Ralph Fulton said on January 22 in an interview with Xbox Wire.
“We’ve always referred to this game as a ‘new beginning’, because one of the things we were convinced of was that we had to reboot the franchise,” he said when asked whether the project was a full reboot.
Fulton noted that many years have passed since the original trilogy ended. Although all three games are still available today, Playground Games chose not to bind itself to their chronology. Instead, the writers decided to allow themselves “the freedom to build our own Albion and tell our own, new story within it.”
In a separate interview with IGN, Fulton was also asked whether the game is connected to the original trilogy or truly represents a reboot.
“What I would say is with this being a reboot, it felt really imperative for us to clear the space, to tell a story that we want to tell within Albion, which is why this isn't a sequel,” he explained.
The story therefore will not necessarily be tied to the original timeline, events or characters. At the same time, Lionhead and Playground Games share the same broader lore. According to Fulton, some parts of that Fable lore are genuinely important to Playground’s story.
Earlier that day, the new Fable was shown at Xbox Developer_Direct, where an autumn 2026 release window was confirmed and many gameplay features were revealed. The game will feature an open world, a choice of the Hero’s gender, character customization and many familiar series mechanics, including jobs, buying homes and interacting with NPCs.
Fable has officially been in development for more than five years — at least since 2020. It was originally planned for release in 2025, but its launch was later tied to Xbox’s 25th anniversary in autumn 2026.
