New Fable Will Not Have a Dog, Says Ralph Fulton

The new Fable will not feature a dog, a decision made personally by game director Ralph Fulton. He discussed it on January 22 in an interview with IGN.
“I did know I was going to get this question. And do you know what? There are some folks on the team that were relishing me getting this question because I cut it a while back,” Fulton explained.
According to him, however, a substantial part of the team wanted to include the dog and have yet to forgive him for that decision.
Curiously, Fulton’s favorite game in the series is Fable 2, which introduced the dog in the first place. The companion later returned in Fable 3. At the same time, many Fable fans dislike the mechanic, arguing that the dog gets in the way of finding treasure independently and can be distracting in combat.
Earlier that day, the new Fable was shown at Xbox Developer_Direct, where an autumn 2026 release window was confirmed and many gameplay features were revealed. The game will feature an open world, a choice of the Hero’s gender, character customization and many mechanics familiar from the series, including jobs, buying homes and interacting with NPCs.
Fable has officially been in development for more than five years — at least since 2020. It was originally planned for release in 2025, but its launch was later tied to Xbox’s 25th anniversary in autumn 2026.
