Fable Hero’s New Look Wasn’t Changed Because of Player Criticism

The appearance of a new version of the female Hero in Fable at Gamescom was not related to player criticism of the character’s looks, Game Director Ralph Fulton explained.
"Earlier this year, we obviously revealed that we have had some customization in our game. It's not a revolutionary thing for an RPG to have, but nevertheless, there was some speculation that we didn't, and we were happy to reveal: Yes, we did," he told IGN.
According to Fulton, Playground Games then began showing different characters in trailers and gameplay videos who can be selected and customized using the character creator.
The heroine from the Gamescom demo is just one of those options. Fulton also noted that he was pleased with the positive reaction to her appearance.
Some players had previously criticized the appearance of the woman who had long served as the main face of the new Fable's marketing campaign. After a new version of the heroine appeared in the latest gameplay footage, there was speculation that Playground Games had changed the character design because of criticism from some players.
A few days earlier, Gamescom 2026 featured 18 minutes of gameplay, both with and without developer commentary. The footage shows a story quest set in Bowerstone. The heroine arrives in the city after an incident in her home village of Briar Hill, meets Humphry, the head of the Heroes' Guild, and tries to help him out of debt, including by fighting local bandits.
Journalists were also able to play another demo focused on the combat system. In a different quest, the Hero and Humphry descend into a mine and fight Hollow Folk and ghosts.
Fable will be released on February 23, 2027, although players who purchase the Premium Edition or Collector's Edition will be able to start five days earlier, on February 18.
