Fable Developers Detail Loot and Progression Systems
Language: EN | RU
Loot found in chests in the new Fable will tie into different gameplay systems, the developers said in an interview with GameSpot.
“You do also find other things in chests. You might find a gift, for example, that would work with the life system. I don’t know what kind of gifts you would find in an old mine, probably a Bag of Blistering or something, but once you’ve collected that, you can then use that on the NPCs around the world,” Creative Director Craig Littler explained.
Baubles found in chests can also be given to other characters to improve the Hero's social standing.
At the same time, the developers want weapon and ability upgrades to have a noticeable impact on gameplay rather than provide minor bonuses such as “+1% damage.” Creative Director Will Kennedy cited one of the spells as an example: initially, it allows the player to suspend an enemy in the air, while an upgrade adds the ability to slam them back down to the ground. Spells and abilities can be developed through a skill tree, while weapons will have their own upgrade paths.
Two days earlier, Gamescom 2026 featured 18 minutes of gameplay, both with and without developer commentary. The footage shows a story quest set in Bowerstone. The Hero arrives in the city after an incident in her home village of Briar Hill, meets Humphry, the head of the Heroes' Guild, and tries to help him out of debt, including by fighting local bandits.
Journalists were also able to play another demo focused on the combat system. In a different quest, the Hero and Humphry descend into a mine and fight Hollow Folk and ghosts.
Fable will be released on February 23, 2027, although players who purchase the Premium Edition or Collector's Edition will be able to start five days earlier, on February 18.
