Sword of Aeons is a legendary weapon in Fable, Fable: The Lost Chapters, and Fable Anniversary. The game's main antagonist, Jack of Blades, seeks the sword as part of his attempt to take control of Albion once again.
In the first Fable, it is the most powerful weapon in the game, at least among light swords. From a story perspective, however, it is primarily intended for an evil-aligned Hero.

"The oldest of all weapons. The Sword of Aeons was bloodforged long before the Old Kingdom. Once unlocked, its power is the power of all Albion."
History
According to Tales of Albion, before the rise of the Old Kingdom, the Sword of Aeons belonged to Jack of Blades, who emerged from a mysterious realm known as the Void alongside the Queen of Blades and the Knight of Blades. Together, the three beings known as the Court forced humanity to bow before them and enslaved Albion.
Some time later — apparently after a considerable period — a boy named William Black was born in Albion. He possessed powerful magical abilities and was determined to overthrow the Court. As an adult, William managed to enter the Void, steal the sword directly from Jack, and escape with his life.
The sword turned out to be an entity in its own right. It began speaking to its new owner and promised to help him defeat the Court in exchange for his soul. William agreed, challenged the Court at the legendary Mount Ruon, and defeated all three of its members. The victory earned William widespread recognition, and he became king of Albion, taking the title of Archon.
In the years that followed, the first Archon's children brought the prosperous kingdom into decline. William himself was unable to stop them because he had contracted a mysterious illness during his time in the Void. He was forced to disappear, apparently taking the Sword of Aeons with him. The weapon then vanished from history until the events of Fable 1.
By the time of the Hero of Oakvale, a descendant of the Archon bloodline, Jack begins searching for the sword once again. Obtaining it is far from simple. First, a ritual involving a member of the royal bloodline must be performed at the abbey in Hook Coast to summon an artefact known as the Septimal Key. The Key must then be used to activate several ancient Focus Sites, while fully awakening the sword's power also requires the death of a descendant of the Archons.
The Hero is unable to stop Jack in time. Jack eventually kills the protagonist's mother, Scarlet Robe, and begins terrorising Albion, starting with the destruction of the Heroes' Guild. Their legendary battle takes place in the Chamber of Fate, where Jack suffers his first defeat at the Hero's hands. At this crucial moment, the Hero can keep the Sword of Aeons by sacrificing his sister, the blind seer Theresa.
The alternative is to cast the sword into the magical vortex that appears after Jack's defeat, destroying the weapon. In the additional storyline introduced in Fable: The Lost Chapters and later included in Fable Anniversary, the Hero can subsequently obtain the equally powerful and visually similar Avo's Tear.
By the time of Fable 2, Albion's historians believe that the protagonist of the first game used the Sword of Aeons against Jack of Blades twice, as stated in a book about the legendary Hero. The historians themselves admit that little reliable information about his life survives. It is also possible that later scholars simply confused the Sword of Aeons with Avo's Tear.
It appears that the Sword of Aeons will also return in the new Fable (2027). Footage from Xbox Games Showcase 2026 shows the villain Isabelle discovering a blade encased in ice that closely resembles Jack of Blades' weapon.
Interesting Facts
- In the original Fable, the Sword of Aeons dealt 550 damage. In TLC, this unusually high value was reduced to 230.
- The Sword of Aeons can be obtained near the beginning of the game using a well-known glitch. The developers left the weapon beneath the central circle in the Chamber of Fate, an area that can be reached by combining the Summon spell with a wasp and Assassin Rush at level 2 or higher. Summon a wasp, target it, and use Assassin Rush to clip beneath the floor, as shown in this video.
