Peter Molyneux Says He Cried Watching the New Fable Presentation

Former Lionhead Studios designer Peter Molyneux says he cried with emotion while watching the new Fable at Xbox Developer_Direct. In a February 11 interview with IGN, he described his reaction to the January presentation.
“When I was watching the Fable trailer, I just felt myself tearing up. I know that I could probably be slaughtered for saying that, but I am someone who cries frequently, and I felt incredibly emotional, and the reason I felt emotional was: F*** me. This thing that we created, it's going to live, it’s going to carry on. This world, which we loved creating so much, and other people loved, has a life,” the developer said.
Molyneux added that he would be sad to see the universe he helped create could simply diminish.
He thought Playground Games made very smart decisions by not continuing the original storyline and by turning the future Hero’s family to stone.
At the same time, the game’s overall tone did not appear to be entirely to Molyneux’s taste. He stressed that he did not want to sound overly critical, noting that the studio still had months to add more “grubbiness” to the world.
The designer explained that he had never imagined “Fable should be clean and every edge should be sharp and defined.” In his view, the series has a more chaotic atmosphere reminiscent of Old England, and he would like to see more of that in the new game.
Molyneux said he will definitely play the new Fable — as someone who genuinely loves the universe, not as someone looking for faults.
The game was shown at Xbox Developer_Direct in late January in a full 12-minute segment. The event confirmed an autumn 2026 release window on PC, Xbox and PlayStation 5 and revealed many gameplay features. The game will feature an open world, a choice of the Hero’s gender, character customization and many mechanics familiar from the series, including jobs, buying homes and interacting with NPCs.
Soon after the presentation, game director Ralph Fulton gave two interviews. Among other things, he shared his view of the core elements of Fable and explained how morality will work in the new game, without horns and halos changing the Hero’s appearance. He also revealed that the next Fable will not feature a dog and that more than a thousand NPCs were created by hand. The official FAQ also confirms that Fable will remain a single-player game.
Fable has officially been in development for more than five years. It was originally planned for release in 2025, and later its launch was associated with Xbox’s 25th anniversary in autumn 2026.
